Wall panels, floor panels, roof panels, and bath pods are built in-house, not on site. That means fewer weather delays, less waste, and a cost estimate that holds.
Site feasibility first
A $650 study evaluates your land for zoning, setbacks, utilities, and site placement. You get a construction cost estimate and a clear roadmap before you commit to anything.
Standardized designs, NC-licensed builder
Every model is a proven, refined design, not a custom quote. Barry Bialik has held an NC General Contractor license for 20+ years. Homes are built green by default, not as an upsell.
Budget and cost are always clear upfront, with no unexpected changes.

Barry Bialik started Compact Cottages in 2006 with a simple premise: high-quality, attainable homes shouldn’t require a custom-build budget. By building wall panels, floor panels, roof panels, and bath pods offsite in-house, Compact Cottages delivers better homes faster, at a price that makes sense. More than 300 homes later, the premise still holds.
Barry chairs Asheville’s Affordable Housing Advisory Committee and holds an NC General Contractor license. Compact Cottages now builds in Asheville and Durham.
